Hackle June 28, 2009

I was directed to a link on craftster about a homemade hackle to make your own roving batts. I thought the idea was absolutly fantastic and set out to buy the supplies needed.

Mark built it for me a bit ago and I took the pound of mill ends ( red, black and a bit of white mohair ) that I received in the shop the swap, and got to work on trying it out.

I just loooove the result, its a very very addicting thing to do.

Heres my hackle, with some of the mill ends on it.

Upper Canada Village News June 9, 2009

* runs around all excited *

I went to upper canada village yesterday morning for the sheep sheering, and when I arrived he was just getting one of the girls out to sheer her. He asked if anyone wanted to give it a go. I think I may have lit up like a lightbulb and ran faster than he could say ok. But, haha, I got to cut some of the fleece off and then I held her and cuddled her while he finished her up. We took about an hour or more making sure she was nice and even and no poo left etc.

I went to get pics of the sheering, but since I was the one holding her and doing it I couldnt get any, but I did get pics of her when she was finished and of the other sheep.

There was a woman there for an agriculture paper who was taking alot of pics and asking him a bunch of questions and asked me a bunch of questions and then got my name so Im going to be in the paper about it Smiley

IM SO EXCITED

One of the ladies there who was spinning to show people what the fleece turned in to bagged me up some of her fleece so I could clean and card it! * dances around * I also took home the section I cut off.

I also ended up with a different type of wool that the woman was spinning and told me to try and last week when I went and talked to the mill guy he gave me some jacobs wool from another farm that he carded and wasnt for sale. Ive already spun it.

I know Ive been MIA, real life has gotten away on me.

I spent two nights this week for hours dying in my new large dying pot and must share what Ive completed.

The first I have called “spring” and is my favourite handspun yet, I spent a very very long time spinning and plying this and the way the colours turned out just makes me soo happy!

Next is a colour choice dear Mark picked out and I just love how rich it turned out, unfortunatly I havent thought of a name for it yet.

Even though Ive been busy, I tried to fit in as much crafty goodness as possible.

This week I was able to finish spinning some yarn.

First off, I finished spinning the sea green rambouillet

Im thinking of turning it into a felted bowl…must find patterns.

Then I started plying the huge huge amount of lace weight yarn into light fingering weight. So far, I have plyed up 165 yds, and dyed it using raspberry lemon koolaid.

I have plyed another 87 yds but have not dyed it yet. I will wait for more to be plyed first.

On a lovely note, I had a nice box of roving arrive late this week. My red/black/white mill end roving from shop the swap. Such a gorgous roving, I cant wait to spin it.

First though, I need to spin some rambouillet for A2K, which Ive already started and dye it the rasp/lemon. Then I also need to spin for katara, who is kind enough to send me some fabric from where she lives in south africa.

Since I recently had alot of rovings come to my collection ( thank you mail! ), and some were natural coloured I decided to start dyeing my yarn/roving.

I looked online for the instructions I had found before and found new instructions here:

http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEfall02/FEATdyedwool.html

I went ahead yesterday to try it out on a very small skein of laceweight yarn I had just finished spinning. I used fruit punch koolaid for the colour and here is the result:

This afternoon I decided to give dyeing the roving a go before spinning it. Using lemon lime packages ( 2 ), I went ahead and dyed roving. The result was quite nice and at the moment it is drying:

A few weeks ago I went searching through www.etsy.com looking for some nice roving to purchase. I ended up finding a lovely seller with handdyed rambouillet. I have never spun rambouillet and her colours were gorgous!

I ended up buying 3 bundles, coming to 4.85oz. As soon as it arrived this week, I have been spinning away. So far, I have spun up half of the roving and completed 1 skein.

I am absolutly in looove with this colour and how it spins up..and mmm so yummy!

Fingering Pink March 13, 2009

For my second drop spindle project, I pulled out my 3/4 pound ball of pink wool carding.

I bought the pink wool at Upper Canada Village in the fall and I cant wait for them to reopen in the spring so I can stock up greatly on the carding.

I decided since my first spinning was chunky, I would go for a fingering weight wool this time. I intend to make a pair of socks.

I took the carding, spilt it in half, then took those halves and split each of them in half.

I have now completed 50% of the carding. Each skein is 76.5 yds in total and have 2 skeins.

My first skein is set and finished, and the second is ready to go in the hot water this afternoon.

Here is skein #1
